Cannon Beach in April: Sister Trip 2017

April 29, 2017

Cannon Beach

View from our balcony at the Surfsand Resort

I love living on the West Coast but I definitely miss my family back in Alabama, especially my sister, Colleen. She’s been my best friend my entire life and not having her a few minutes away is painful. Since I moved to Seattle four years ago, we started doing a sister trip every year where we meet somewhere for vacation and it’s always my favorite few days of the year. We’ve been to Bermuda, Mexico and Hawaii; this year we decided to keep it more domestic and visit the Oregon Coast, Cannon Beach to be exact. I had actually been here before, but it was so stunning of a place that I had to come back. I’m telling y’all, this place is gorgeous and it needs to be on your bucket list.

Surfsand Resort

We stayed at the lovely Surfsand Resort and the photos above will, I’m sure, tell you why. It’s on the beach and iconic Haystack Rock is just steps from your door. We got to watch ominously beautiful storms roll in over the Pacific Ocean and captivating West Coast sunsets from our balcony.

The Wayfarer

Make sure to eat at The Wayfarer Restaurant and Lounge when you’re in Cannon Beach, it’s the charming restaurant at the Surfsand Resort. The food is super fresh, simple and delicious. Pictured is their Troll Caught Salmon: Seared Chinook Salmon over Asparagus Risotto with Microgreens. Oh my goodness y’all, this was money. I contemplated getting the steak but ultimately when you’re on the coast you have to eat seafood. (I wouldn’t order oysters in Denver).

The Wayfarer

Oh, and when you’re at The Wayfarer definitely do not skip dessert. Y’all know I don’t eat a ton of sweets. I’d just rather consume my calories through cheese and starches and burgers, but my sister wanted dessert and this sounded bomb (which it clearly was). I’m sorry guys – I let y’all down because I didn’t write down the name of this dish or take a photo of the menu like I always do. Probably because I was mesmerized by the chocolate layers of pure awesomeness in front of me.

Public Coast Brewing

Public Coast Brewing is another must on your list of places to stop when you’re in Cannon Beach. The beer here is fabulous and they have some killer burgers, too. It’s also a cool, chill spot to hang out. I had a boring (but good) pilsner because I like lighter beers but sis had a tangerine IPA and I really enjoyed it. It was super bright and fresh tasting from the citrus.

Surfsand Resort

When one has a view such as this from their balcony, one orders champagne from room service and spends the afternoon sipping bubbles with her sister on it. I love champagne. There are just times when it is appropriate to drink champagne and vacation is one of them. We sat and sipped the afternoon away, Colleen reading her kindle and me writing on my laptop. Utter perfection.

Newman's

We enjoyed a delicious meal at Newman’s at 988, just a couple moments walk from our hotel. Colleen had beef medallions that were cooked perfectly medium rare and I had Shrimp Scampi because again, seafood only seemed appropriate on the coast. I haven’t been ordering shrimp much lately, I’ve honestly kind of been over them, but something gave me the urge to order this and it did not disappoint. This little restaurant is just darling and serves classic French Italian cuisine.

The Wayfarer

We spent our last afternoon in Cannon Beach with drinks at The Wayfarer before retiring to our room to watch the sunset from our balcony. What a perfect few days we had. We ate, we drank, we watched The Golden Girls, we walked on the beach, we relaxed and didn’t do much of anything really. And it was, as I said, perfect. The best part of the trip was, of course, being with my sister. I love you sis, I can’t wait to plan Sister Trip 2018.
