The Best Bites of 2019 (Seattle)

January 2, 2020

2019 was another utterly delicious year in Seattle and I had my camera with me every step of the way. It’s time to post the best of it all and so I dove in to the tens of thousands of photos I took in 2019 a couple weeks ago. I’m finally done and this is the result: the best 47 things I ate in Seattle last year. I hope this makes you very hungry!

1. Spicy Miso Pork Ramen at Adana
Adana launched ramen night at the beginning of 2019 and that made me one very happy girl. Fellow noodle soup lovers – Adana does ramen night every Wednesday!
2. Green Tomato and Fennel Gazpacho at Art of the Table
Chef Dustin Ronspies is doing magical things with soup here, y’all.
3. Fried Bread with Prosciutto Cottio at Artusi
Absolutely exquisite.
4. Mac and Cheese at Bad Bishop Bar
Definitely the best mac and cheese I had in 2019. (Bad Bishop is currently closed for repairs, set to reopen February of this year.)
5. The “Lobb” Salad at Bar Harbor
This will change the way you look at salads.
6. Buttermilk Hush Puppies at Ben Paris
I can’t even begin to tell you how ecstatic this southern girl was to find bomb hush puppies in Seattle.
7. Griddle Cakes at Bounty Kitchen
The best griddle cakes/pancakes I’ve had anywhere. I have no idea how they make them gluten free and so damn delicious.
8. Beer Can Chicken at Central Smoke
This deliciousness is offered only on Friday and it’s served with three Rainier beers!
9. Pork Tacos at Copal
The most perfect little tacos; this has become one of my favorite spots in Pioneer Square.
10. Kale Salad at D & E Pioneer Square
This salad is a masterpiece. Light, bright and flavorful.
11. Chocolate and Salted Caramel Cake at Deep Sea Sugar and Salt
All hail the awesomeness of Deep Sea Sugar and Salt. Every cake here is to-die-for.
12. The Veggie Diablo at Delicatus
This baby stands up to any sammie with meat. I eat this at least once a week when I’m in Seattle. (The Delicatus Pioneer Square location closed in 2019 but you can still get their bomb sandwiches at their Benaroya Hall location)
13. Garlic Shrimp Toast with Wild Garlic Vinegar over Fried House Foccacia at Eden Hill
A work of art on a plate.
14. The “Big Max” Cheeseburger at Eden Hill Provisions
A bacon & brisket patty, gouda, secret sauce, onion and pickles make this burger perfection.
15. The King Crab Corn Dog at Eight Row
Just as good as it sounds, y’all.
16. Pumpkin Pie Yogurt at Ellenos
(complete with real pumpkin pie chunks)
17. The Grits at FlintCreek Cattle Co.
Hands down the best grits I’ve had in Seattle. It’s like super buttery mashed potatoes and grits had a baby.
18. Chocolate Marshmallow Doughnuts at General Porpoise
To be fair, ALL of the doughnuts here are AMAZING but the chocolate marshmallow is my favorite.
19. Octopus with Ink Fried Rice, Chinese Sausage, Mama Lil’s aioli, Ruby Mustard Greens and Pimenton Glaze at Heartwood Provisions
The Octopus dish of my dreams.
20. The Fried Chicken Biscuit at Honest Biscuit
As an Alabama girl, there is nothing I love more than fried chicken and this biscuit always satisfies my craving.
21. Roasted Chicken Egg Noodle Soup at Hue Ky Mi Gia
Truth be told, all of the noodles soups here are incredible and their fried chicken wings are equally awesome.
22. The Bolognese at Il Corvo
It goes without saying the pasta at Il Corvo is some of the best in the city. I’m here to tell you that this kale salad was also mindblowingly good.
23. Fazzoletti with Morel Mushrooms and Olive Oil Poached Egg Yolk at Il Nido
This is what heaven tastes like.
24. Beef Rib Tacos at Jack’s BBQ
No one does barbecue like Jack and his beef rib tacos will make you swoon.
25. Kimchi Udon Hot Pot at Japonessa
As someone who is obsessed with spicy noodle soups, I was beyond stoked to see Japonessa add this to their menu in 2019. It’s spicy and 100% delicious.
26. Foie Gras “Tofu” with Sake Poached Shrimp and Wasabi at Kamonegi
Yes the soba at Kamonegi is fantastic, but this foie dish is what I couldn’t stop thinking about. Definitely one of the richest, most flavorful and unique dishes I had in 2019.
27. Wild Boar and Painted Hill Beef Ragu at Lecosho
This has been one of my favorite things in Seattle for years. It’s absolutely perfect and you can get it at happy hour for just $12.
28. The Tavern Burger at Loretta’s Northwesterner
So simple and so right: charbroiled beef with melted cheese, wrapped up in a toasted white bun with pickles, onions, and special sauce. It’s all you want in a burger.
29. Green Tea Tiramisu at Matsu
The perfect end to any meal; do not skip dessert here!
30. The Pomodoro at Pasta Casalinga
Pro tip: add a blob of burrata on top for an extra $2.
31. Seafood Paella at Pintxo
When you are craving paella in Seattle, look no further than this Belltown gem. They also do paella cooking classes here throughout the year, check out the schedule here.
32. The Lobster Roll at Proper Fish
Located just a ferry ride away on Bainbridge Island, this bomb lobster roll is absolutely worth the short trip over from downtown.
33. The Miso Rekka Ramen at Ramen Danbo
This Japanese chain made it’s debut in Seattle about a year ago and I have visited (at least) a dozen times. Their ramen is incredibly rich and flavorful and completely customizable from the thickness of the noodles and broth to the level of umami and heat.
34. The Corned Lamb Salad at Revel
Hands down one of the best salads I’ve ever had. Rockstar chef Rachel Yang tells me it’s been on the menu from the very beginning and has been a guest favorite since day one.
35. The Spring Pea + Dungeness Crab Ravioli at Rider
Just as delicious as she is beautiful.
36. Stonefruit Gazpacho with Poached Shrimp at RN 74
I’m a sucker for soups y’all and this one was sublime.
37. Cinnamon Roll Monkey Bread at Sawyer
Thank you Chef Mitch Mayers for making this incredibly decadent brunch dish a reality.
38. Nashville Hot Chicken at Sisters and Brothers
I believe this to be the best damn fried chicken in the Seattle area.
39. The Khao Soi at Soi
Another kick ass spicy noodle soup I can’t get enough of. This is as good (or better) than any of the many khao sois I ate in Thailand this year.
40. Hearth Fired Lemon Dutch Baby with Rhubarb Jam at Stoneburner
The perfect breakfast when you’re craving something sweet.
41. Chocolate Cake at Storyville
This cake is so moist and delicious; it’s probably my favorite sweet treat in Seattle. However it’s not for sale – you have to be there when they’re handing it out for free, which they do once a day at a random time. All patrons in the shop are offered a piece and if you’re ever lucky enough to be there, ask them to cut you off a big slice.
42. Salmon Nigiri at Sushi Kashiba
Sushi Kashiba has really ruined me for all other sushi. The quality and freshness is unmatched and I consider myself very lucky whenever I have a meal here.
43. Pork Dumplings with Szechuan Sauce at Tacoma Szechuan
It’s not technically Seattle, but it’s so close and so damn good these are going on the list.
44. The Philly Cheesesteak at Tat’s Deli
I finally got around to trying Tat’s famous Philly Cheesesteak last year and it was even better than I expected.
45. The Marinated Zucchini Sandwich at The Mountaineering Club
This killer sammie has spicy tomatoes, burrata, fried shallot, basil and zucchini on sourdough bread.
46. Spicy King Crab Soup at Umi Sake House
Savory, spicy and fantastically delicious.
47. The Meatloaf Sandwich at Uncle Eddie’s
The buttermilk soaked fried onions are what set this masterpiece off.

There she is friends, the 47 most delicious things I ate in Seattle in 2019. It’s such a long process of compiling, editing and laying this massive blog out that it always takes me days. I store every photo I take by year and within that year I have a folder for every single restaurant I photograph (which between work and fun is hundreds), then at the end of the year I go through every single folder searching for my favorites. I’m incredibly happy with the results from 2019 and hope it will inspire you to get out and eat, Seattle!

Happy New Year! – Steph
