My first trip to the brunch buffet.
Well, yesterday I discovered something truly wonderful in our food obsessed city and I couldn’t wait to share it. Get ready, y’all, because the brunch buffet at Goldfinch Tavern is going to blow you away. I first shied away from the buffet option with it’s $45 price tag; I had come in to work on my laptop and have some breakfast and a mimosa or two, but when I saw the buffet being set up upon arriving, I just could not resist. $45 gets you all you can eat at their incredible buffet, bottomless mimosas AND an entree. What? You really can’t beat that folks, not with the quality of food they were serving – fresh oysters, shrimp, cheeses, smoothies, veggies and more await you at the buffet. There’s even a biscuit and gravy station (um, this southern girl says yes please). So put Goldfinch on your list for brunch, I promise you’ll be utterly delighted.
There was charcuterie for days at the brunch buffet and I’ve been on a bit of a charcuterie kick ever since I got back from Buenos Aires. We ate a lot of meat and cheese plates there, and I definitely miss it. The prosctuitto, salamis and other prepared meats took me back to Argentina.
I don’t really do seafood for breakfast/brunch – it’s not something I usually want for my first meal of the day. But I just returned from an 11 day trip home to Alabama and I ate a lot of red meat while I was there and no seafood. I missed it. I loaded up on shrimp and oysters. They were so incredibly fresh I went back for more.
You may have noticed by now that I can’t resist cheese. This cheese wasn’t labeled and I didn’t ask what it was. Clearly one was a brie, while the other two were medium hard white cheeses. I loved them all. Cheese on a buffet is dangerous for me.
I’ve had dessert at Goldfinch before, so I already knew that their pastry chef, Gigi Ramirez, was mad talented. It’s no surprise that this banana bread was stellar and the fresh baked cookies were also incredible.
And after you’ve feasted on all the delicious things at the brunch bar, you will enjoy an entree of your choosing, and I chose the crab cake (again, had to go with seafood, but the steak was tempting). It was superbly done, lots of fresh crab and a light citrusy slaw beneath.
